Meet the greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis)! As a nocturnal marsupial from Australia, it spends most of its day hanging out in deep burrows, which can be as far as 10 feet (3 meters) below the surface. It’s an expert digger equipped with strong, clawed forelimbs. The female’s pouch faces backwards—preventing soil from entering the pouch while the mother digs! Its enormous ears help this insect-hunter hear termites and other prey underground.
