Perhaps the most terrifying instrument ever devised, the sound of the Death whistle has been described as the “scream of 1000 corpses,” and I can’t help but agree. Listening to the instrument, I was immediately reminded of the screams played in haunted houses crossed with the sound of rushing winds. Records and archaeological evidence indicate the instrument may have been used in ritual sacrifices or funeral ceremonies, though some believe it was a tool for psychological warfare in battle. Engineer Roberto Velázquez Cabrera has made a good deal of information available for English speakers on these singular instruments, and runs an amazing website detailing all sorts of Mexican Aerophones. Functionally, the instrument’s behavior is made clear from its cross section. Air is blown through the tubular mouthpiece, where it generates turbulent noise upon meeting the sharp edge of the primary resonator, the resonator itself generates the harsh tone of the whistle, which is then filtered by the secondary resonator that opens on the bottom of the whistle. By placing their hands around the bottom of the instrument, players can adjust the filtering frequencies, creating the wavering death scream sound. While this truly amazing instrument may be a relic of the past, modern reproductions are available from the Oregon Flute Store for $100. Of course, it’s a bit morbid for a Christmas present, but this seems like an essential tool for an acoustician on Halloween! A Secret Underwater Ballroom, Built For a Notorious Victorian Swindler
Walk far into the woods near the village of Witley in Surrey, England and you’ll find a hidden treasure. The directions go like this: Walk a mile and a quarter west, into the long neglected woods. Find the stone wall surrounding a kitchen garden. There you’ll find a small building with an arched doorway. Go inside, down the spiral staircase, and walk down the long teardrop-shaped tunnel to the end. There’s no “X” marking this treasure, but you’ll know you’ve found it. You’re now in a domed, glass ceilinged room, yellow light gently flickering through the water above. Welcome to Whitaker Wright’s hidden ballroom, submerged deep beneath a murky lake.

Brilliant Indian comic book turns rape victim into a kick-ass super hero
India’s rape crisis has a new female face, but it’s not what you think.
A new comic book, Priya’s Shakti, is making waves in India for its unconventional heroine: a rape victim-turned-superhero who fights gendered violence with the help of the Hindu goddess Parvati.
According to the comic’s website, the storyline focuses on Priya, a mortal woman who experienced a brutal rape and ensuing social stigma and isolation. Inspired by Parvati, Priya breaks her silence and reveals her assault, encouraging people around the world to take action against sexual violence.

Reminder that Ferguson is a food desert and school is canceled. People’s movement is restricted. The work of the St Louis Food Bank is vital right now. Help if you can. (x)
If you are like me, and of a very, very practical bent, there is literally no higher or best use of your latte money than to feed kids. In the BEST of times, food insecurity is a huge childhood issue throughout the United States, and one that somehow gets truly ignored for sexier causes.
But with schools being shut down in Ferguson, that’s some kids’ meal for the damn day. It’s even more dire. I cannot be more serious about this, even a dollar goes so far at these food banks, they don’t need awareness, they need MONEY. Currency is the currency of the realm.

Each day of the Christmas holiday, the city of Montgomery closed over forty one-block areas in neighborhoods, so children could safely play in the streets.

Ok but leopard slug sex is the most beautiful. They suspend themselves from a branch and intertwine their bodies. Then their penises come out of their head/neck/shoulder area and intertwine to form a blue flower, through which sperm is exchanged. Soft instrumental music plays, and all the while David Attenborgh narrates.
