I think i would like the green mile (book) more if john coffey didn’t serenely accept his fate and/or the narrator was shattered haunted and suffering for the rest of his magically extended life

#it makes me wanna watch the movie. to see#bc the narrative is so tragic but i think it reeeeeally lets the narrator off the hook. like he feels BAD about killing an innocent man who#had incredible lifesaving magic powers. but not bad enough to risk his career over it. i would like him to realize afterwards that it was#his moral obligation to TRY even if it ruined his life. but instead he’s just kinda bummed and his wife dies at a pretty advanced age#or what if he started thinking about all the other john coffeys he electrocuted. innocent men who deserved better.#I’m not saying horror novel protagonists should be morally correct or thatbad people in fiction need to suffer its just that this seems like#a blindspot for king he really struggles getting away from Nice White Guy and really NARRATIVELY serve women and poc#also i think its nice when a horror protagonist is shattered and haunted and never the same. its good
