Dandelion Lemonade
1 cup dandelion heads*
3 cups water
¾ cups sugar
2 lemon juice and zest
Pull petals from dandelion and put in bowl with one cup of water overnight. Sift into a pan, then add lemons, sugar and remaining water. Stir until sugar dissolves, bring to boil then pour into a sterilized bottle or jar. Enjoy cold. *like with all foraging practices, be mindful where you’re gathering from and how much you are gathering.

zagreauswhen kai fagerström happened upon an old cottage in rural suomusjärvi, finland, abandoned decades ago, he began to document its new residents.
there were badger cubs born under the floorboards, who now used the fireplace as an entrance. there was a raccoon dog pup who would drop in every night at the same time. there was a pygmy owl who would try to catch the home’s voles. there were red squirrels who had built their dreys inside the house. and there was a fox pup that had taken up in the dilapidated shed.
“there’s consolation in the idea that nature is reclaiming the places it has lent to people,” he says, adding that when he enters the house “it’s like stepping back in time. the past lingers in the corners.” it’s not just the animals that interest him, but the people no longer there.
Our Ida B. Wells anthology, The Light of Truth: Writings of an Anti-Lynching Crusader was published last week! For a little intro to this amazing woman, here’s a really cool take on her life story by Kate Beaton (of Hark! A Vagrant fame).

Realistic House Plant Cupcake by Alana Jones-Mann
Inspired by a gardening project, Brooklyn-based baker Alana Jones-Mann decided to make cupcakes that look like common miniature cacti. Using frosting, green food coloring and of course, baking talent, Alana successfully made a bunch of cacti cupcake cuteness and even planted them on soil (crushed graham crackers). These realistic cacti cupcake are made with such impressive details that some of them even appear sharp to the touch. If you like those edible cacti and want to make your own, head on over to Alana Jones-Mann’s blog and find the step-by-step tutorial.
