On 20 April, 2008, Brazilian Catholic Priest, Adelir Antônio de Carli, attempted to set a new world record for flying the longest attached to a cluster of balloons. Using 1000 balloons, Carli was said to reach altitudes as high as 6000 meters. At some point during this voyage, Carli disappeared. Balloons from his contraption were later discovered floating in the sea. He had equipped himself with a parachute, five days worth of food and water, a GPS device, and a phone. On 4 July, 2008, Carli’s waist and legs were discovered floating in the sea. The rest of his body was never found.
