Gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) with a samson mutation.
Samson is a recessive genetic mutation that affects the growth of the coat. A normal fox’s coat will be made up of two layers; the soft, short and woolly undercoat, and the long outer guard hairs. Samson foxes fail to grow any guard hairs, leaving them with just the woolly undercoat. The undercoat in samson foxes may also appear curly, as can be seen on this fox.
