i’ve seen that “93% of gay men don’t want to be labelled queer” post going around a ton today so i just want to point out that

  • there were only 200-500 people polled overall (the article linked in the tumblr post vs the original source report conflicting numbers) (unspecified how many were lgbt)
  • the article doesn’t state (and there are no details from the original polling source) about how many gay men specifically were actually polled
  • i can’t find the “93%” statistic in anything published from the original source
  • it was a twitter poll open to anyone (also i’m not sure how you can figure out how many of your respondents were gay men if you’re just doing a twitter poll…)
  • it was conducted by a UK-specific lgbt organization and likely got the majority of its responses just from people in the UK

just because a tumblr post has a link, that doesn’t automatically mean the information from the link is reputable. I’d be interested to see an actual properly-conducted and cross-cultural, multigenerational poll on how gay men feel about the word queer being applied to themselves, but the one that’s been going around tumblr just seems like its making a conclusion and blowing it out of proportion from a very small and questionable sample size
