white people regurgitate the absurd idea that Canada is a “post-racial society” while spitting on multiculturalism, marginalizing people, and refusing to address the country’s racist history. they know it’s all a sham, but they want to spout their “new age” utopia bullshit to shame oppressed people who speak up.

the Aboriginal people of Canada have been and still are treated like shit. Europeans came over, slaughtered and enslaved them, and stole their land, and the sentiment of white supremacy and colonialism that caused all of that still pervades. in 2008, Richard Pound, who was vice president of the International Olympic Committee stated, “We must not forget that 400 years ago, Canada was a land of savages, with scarcely 10,000 inhabitants of European origin.” he referred to an entire people as savages. he fucking implied that a LACK of europeans (and you know he meant white europeans) signified a subhuman society. this man was an important figure for the Olympics.

oh, and slavery was legal until 1834, and, despite what many say, that really wasn’t that long ago. after it was abolished, freed slaves were forced into segregation and destitution. to this day, black Canadians are treated horrifically. there’s are a fucking reason Novia Scotia is known as the Mississippi of the North. there’s a fucking reason systematic oppression and hate crimes are still a huge issue.

or how about when people came from Asia and were put to work on the railroad, but weren’t even permitted citizenship, the right to vote, or the right to own land. Asian businesses were constantly the targets of violence, and Chinese people were eventually banned from fucking immigrating to Canada. they made an entire group of people illegal. oh, and Canada had Japanese internment camps during World War II, just like America. it didn’t matter if you were born in Canada — you were guilty of being Japanese. racial immigration restrictions weren’t all lifted until the 60s and, if i’m not mistaken, the government didn’t apologize for imprisoning Japanese people until the 80s.

also, i don’t give a fuck if there’s marriage equality, that means nothing. hate crimes against non-heterosexual people more than doubled in 2008 alone, with 75% of the crimes being violent in nature. oh, and how about the fact that there are no federal laws protecting transgender individuals? or that there’s a shocking number of homeless LGBT+ youth? stop acting like our struggle is over as soon as we can get married. in a world where we face an increased likelihood to be homeless, commit suicide, and/or attacked and even murdered for who we are, being able to get married is not our main concern.

here’s a specific incident that disproves your absurd statement: two Muslim brothers, after their evening Ramadan prayers, were attacked by a group of white Canadians, who physically assaulted them, threatened them with a knife, and told them to “go back to India” (they’re Egyptian btw). that was early July. literally a handful of days ago.

your government is still overrun with bigoted conservatives, and your society still caters to white, straight, Christian people (mainly men; don’t get me started on the sexism). people of color and non-heterosexual people are still othered and systematically discriminated against.
