Horse chestnut men! And yes, I did choose to sculpt them (I made three in all but apparently only really photographed one?) as smooth spheres and THEN attach each spine individually. Because I love to do things in the most difficult way possible always (actually it was quicker than I expected & also kind of soothing. Good busywork type stuff)!
