Lecanora phryganitis

Mealy fog fingers, shrubby rim lichen

That common name once again: MEALY. FOG. FINGERS.

I mean, seriously. An incredible common name for an incredibly rare lichen. This lil pal is only found in a few isolated populations in central costal California. And it is threatened by costal development, climate change, costal erosion, invasive plants, and recreation. Can you imagine how tragic it would be to lose mealy fog fingers??? I mean, my guess is you just found out it exists so it would mean nothing to you, but it should! Support conservation education, science, and federal protection for endangered species, and vote for the people that prioritize those things. And get to know your local lichens and make efforts to share your love and knowledge with others. Save the mealy fog fingers!
