the last 3 minutes of witches 2020 was one of the most off kilter endings I’ve seen in a movie, ever

this is the only thing I can show you

ok I can’t find a way to get this clip so I’ll just explain the end of this film as best as i can. short answer yes.

For the context of people who haven’t read the book: The original ending is that the boy is stuck as a mouse forever and will only live about 9 years, but he and his grandmother decide to use the last years of their life ridding the world of all witches using a list of them they found in the hotel room of the grand high witch.

(the rich kid who was also turned into a mouse is assumed by the main character to have been killed by his parents)

the ending of the 2020 film is this:

they try to give the rich kid back to his parents and they’re like no and that’s the end of that. the other mouse was an orphan, so the grandmother takes all the mice home.
the grandson is like “cool how long do mice live” and the grandmother is like “whelp, not long!” and he’s like “cool, sounds great” and then the grandmother is like “but remember, only god decides when you die!” and he’s like “cool, sounds great”. the only way I can really describe the tone in which they present this is ‘generically happy”

it then cuts immediately to a dance party ending set to “we are family”

the next minute and a half is an incredible slideshow of what looks to be a very lighthearted witch murdering roadtrip:

the last shot of the film:

except that isn’t the last shot of the film because interlaced with the credits is the main character, now an old, grotesque, chris rock mouse (pictured below) indoctrinating a small army of children on how to kill witches. they play scary music over this which makes it feel like he’s the villain.

Octavia spencer says “are you ready for this old timer” and chris rock goes “grandma I’ve never been more ready” and they play patriotic music. chris rock crosses his arms and stares at a wall.

somewhere in the middle of this robert zemeckis is credited again, guillermo del toro three times. end film

This… is quite a way to learn this movie exists…
