peebles teach me how to be you

can we just talk about this for a minute

because seriously i have so much respect for the adventure time team. they’ve made a successful cartoon that isn’t random poop and fart jokes for a solid eleven minutes. sure, adventure time has its immature moments, but then there’s parts like this.

pb’s backed up against the wall in a position that’s way too common in today’s society. you can tell she’s scared and uncomfortable. so what does she do? she beats the shit out of ricardio.

she doesn’t “play nice”, she doesn’t “let him down gently”, she tears off his limbs and stomps on his face. then ricardio tries to play the nice guy card and she has none of it. it’s refreshing to see something aimed at children that doesn’t state that girls need to be polite and sweet and stand by while someone makes them uncomfortable.

basically, i love this show and i love how it teaches girls something that’ll actually come in handy some day. god fucking bless.

adventure time teaches by example

ice king gets beat up when he’s a jerk, proportionally to his crime

ricardio’s crimes were… fucking horrendous, and they were gonna be horrendous even more. so this was an extremely extremely well-deserved beating.

i also just rewatched the first episode with him in, “ricardio the heartguy”, and there’s a lot of references to sexual assault cases in there. or stories such as “heroes” that end up with sexual assault from people who they thought they could trust and someone had vibes against but those vibes were ignored.

That episode ended with Finn and Jake saving PB, and Ricardio getting a beating and going back inside Ice King. 

This episode - “Lady & Peebles” was boarded by Cole Sanchez and Rebecca Sugar. The former used all sorts of imagery and body horror that was symbolic of rape culture and assault with the “stimulating” weapons Ricardio put out to incapacitate them (the strokey hands for example made me cringe because of a similar looking harrassment I got in high school) and then there were the eyes and tongue and wow. They didn’t hold back at all with the creepy symbolism.

Rebecca Sugar boards this brilliant scene, showing PB’s fear as there appears to be no escape and everyone is dying, and then Ricardio looming over her in that familiar pose which - allow me to get the storyboard which ive made much analysis of -

 - is leaning over her in a “hitting on her sort of way”

and it is really fucking obvious, through his dialogue and body language, and pb’s body language, that he wants to get her undressed

and then the above happens

it’s very telling of PB’s characters that, in the face of an absolutely horrible situation where there’d be no help at all, she grasped together pure determination and willpower and just… beat the shit out of this guy, using her extremely quick analysis of his weaknesses to kick his ass

and then she drags everyone back god knows how

but adventure time, once again, doesn’t do life lessons - it does learning-through-demonstration which is much better. whether they know what the symbolism behind this episode was or not, people will now detect people with ricardio’s habits and language, and they will become suspicious of the intentions of said people, which is good - someone who goes “i just wanted to impress you” after a creepy episode like that does not deserve to be trusted, they deserve to be tagged.

Reblogging again because a) It’s my #1 favorite scene in Adventure Time b) I DIDN’T KNOW REBECCA SUGAR DID THE STORYBOARD HOLY SHIT I KNOW REBECCA SUGAR. She went to the same high school and was in the same art program as one of my best friends and my mom is friends with her mom. Ahhh and she’s only a few years older than me I can’t believe she did this im gonna cry this is like meeting your favorite celebrity before they become famous or something
