US COLLEGES.

for real though.

American higher education baffles me. The best universities in my country are completely free, and even the private ones are not so expensive that it’d force someone to incur in debt.

Could someone tell me how much US students pay to attend college? In Canada, colleges tend to be 3-5K a year, and universities are 5-7K.

“In its most recent survey of college pricing, the College Board reports that a "moderate” college budget for an in-state public college for the 2012–2013 academic year averaged $22,261. A moderate budget at a private college averaged $43,289. But what makes up these charges? Of course, financial aid might help cover some costs, but it is good to know how they add up to a total “cost of attendance” figure provided by the college"-CollegeData

Though in my experience, this definitely varies and I don’t know their definition of moderate. When I was looking at colleges, I applied to schools with tuition ranging from 10k (UMass) to 45k (Private, Religious) and that’s without residential fees (which vary, but can add another 10k to the total cost).

We’re students. Our minimum wage, part time jobs don’t provide the money for four years of tuition and living expenses. And saving up? While attending high school we literally do not have enough hours in a day to make a dent into these costs AND keep our grades up high enough to even get into these increasingly competitive schools AND participate in other activities such as sports, clubs, leadership positions, and volunteers programs in order to be “well rounded” enough to catch attention from a scholarship board.

We’re old enough to be forced into crippling debt “in hopes of a better future”, but not old enough to buy a bottle of wine to comfortably cry over.
