i’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be open to interpretation wether tony dies in made in america, the screen cutting to black could be an allusion to death and specifically the way a mobster’s life could be abruptly ‘cut short’ at any moment. but it could also allude to continuity, with the rest of the story being “unseen” as is much of the criminal underworld- our privileged glimpse into this clandestine life is simply over. also i can’t find anything ANYWHERE about david chase “joking” about tony's death? everything i’ve read has just shown a very sensitive and thoughtful handling of this tension. MOREOVER why are people still discussing this in 2019? the sopranos has been a cultural megalith for over 10 years now... it’s not NEWS that tony MIGHT die at the end?
