Mary Jane Rathbun, commonly known as “Brownie Mary,” gained notoriety in the early 1980s and an outspoken and articulate supporter of marijuana. She was at the forefront of local, state and national movements to legalise marijuana for medicinal purposes. She became a fixture at San Francisco General Hospital in the early days of the AIDS epidemic and prepared and delivered marijuana-laced baked goods to those suffering from AIDS to relieve their nausea and pain.
