this unusually pale bird is a western scrub jay with leucism. leucism is a mutation that causes a partial reduction of pigments such as melanin; it is different from albinism, which is a complete lack of melanin. in birds, this can present problems with flight - melanin is part of the makeup of feathers, and without it they are weak and prone to wear and tear.
