thehumon:

I have decided to start my most ridiculous project of the year: I want to make a scarf with my Shih Tzu dogs’ fur.

I’ve never even made yarn so I’ll have to learn how to do that. I’ll have to wait for my dogs’ fur to grow out. I’ll have to learn how to clean clumps of fur.

I fully understand why people might think it’s weird to make clothes from dog fur, and I can see why people wouldn’t want to wear the fur of other people’s dogs, but this project actually combines my love of three things: my dogs, knitting, and history.

Dog yarn is crazy warm compared to sheep yarn. The number that everyone throws around is 80% warmer than wool, so it was used in Scandinavia for centuries during the horribly cold winter months. It’s so warm in fact that people advise against making sweaters from it because you’d be at risk of overheating, and even the Vikings mixed it with wool. In North America dog fur was used for nice warm blankets.

So yeah, have some photos of people wearing cardigans made from their dogs.
