yep! i summed it up in another response to this post, but, basically, in the movie, i think this scene is less meant to be chilling (it’s at the very end when we’ve already seen Pennywise a ton and the kids are starting to scare him) and more meant to show how fucking pissed Pennywise is getting with the kids trying to thwart his plans.
he does the dance to distract a character and basically tell him to go fuck himself. also i got the impression it was kind of meant to be funny, too, since Pennywise does have that malevolent playfulness. several people laughed in my theater and then stopped abruptly because the scene gets increasingly violent.
Tbh this weird dance bit scared the shit out of me!!! I watch lots of horror movies so all the scary teeth/zombie chanting stuff doesn’t bother me at all but I’ve been scared of clowns since i saw the original It movies as a young teen and this guys weird angry dance just jams the shit on the Creep Out button in my brain. Its just like… so bizarrely inappropriate? And eerily playful? And clown-y???
