….That’s really what makes Bojack Horseman feel so different from other “adult cartoons,“  how often its “mature themes” and “comedy” are actually separate from each other.

South Park and Family Guy spend almost every moment mashing them up into cheap, gross and desperate shock humor while Bojack will spend one scene gravely exploring the realistic repercussions of emotional abuse and then the very next scene telling puns about whales. There are plenty of exceptions, but the adult stuff is pretty frequently allowed to be serious while the comedy is allowed to just be shamelessly light and silly.
