SpongeBob’s momma might be black, but the fact of the matter is is that he never claims his blackness unless he wants to silence his darker skinned counterparts, such as Sandy, by bringing up the hardships he supposedly faces as a light skinned/passing sponge

son-of-a-wiitch

The only time he places any claim on black culture is when he uses it to entertain his white friends, like when he dips into black gospel music in the pizza delivery episode.

^ He also attempts to adopt a stereotypical gangsta attitude when he is trying to gain entrance to the Salty Splitoon.

Y’all remember that minstrel show he did when he decided to be a part time comedian…

russianspacegeckosexparty

I touched on that in another post, but yes, how could we forget that mammy fest?

poonpie

Don’t forget when he was shocked that Patrick got his license before he did because he was convinced his “whiteness” was going to give him an easier pass than his non-passing counterpart.

But Patrick comes from a wealthy family, who pay for everything he has. He admits himself he’s never done anything in his life but wants recognition for it. So, he appropriates black culture by imitating SpongeBob so he can be praised for doing what gets SpongeBob sent home

You’re absolutely right. This idea that non-black people of color are exempt from perpetuating anti-blackness

russianspacegeckosexparty

Patrick is blatantly antiblack against Sandy on numerous occasions, and he also bonds over antiblackness with his (not really his) parents by constantly degrading SpongeBob, who’s fulfilling the role of uneducated black friend.

What about Squidward

lastqueenofmars

squidward is unproblematic

flyredact

I think the fuck not. Squidward is one of the most problematic, a white that thinks he is too cultured to ever be associated with Spongebob, a light skinned black but black nonetheless, who he wpuld rather not live nor work around, even going so far as to attempt sabotaging him getting a job.

Squidward, too, feels he shouldn’t have to work as a lowly cashier and should already be a famous musician and artist because of his wjite privilege, and even expected Spongebob to wait on him hand and foot after losing his job and Spongebob graciously letting him live under his roof.

But have a sip of this Long Island iced tea, hunty: Squidward is NOT white. He is OBVIOUSLY a cephalopod of color, one who doesn’t have light skinned privilege like SpongeBob. Yes, he can be bougie. Who isn’t from time to time? He wants nice things for himself. Let sis live that dream.

poonpie

Squidward is keen to respectability politics. He often is disgusted by Spongebob and Patrick’s crudeness. He believes that behaving a certain way and living a certain lifestyle will get you places.

cardozzza

It comes from a place of deep seated self hatred and feelings of inadequacy–we see this in his interactions with other cephalopods, most notably squillium. It’s still harmful to others, but I think we can allow him some small measure of sympathy and support–especially since he manages to achieve full assimilation into the lifestyle he thinks he wants but ultimately returns to his noc (neighborhood of color)
