Kohl jar in the form of hedgehog

This small, delicate vessel was probably intended to contain kohl (black eye-paint), as the opening in the back is just large enough for the insertion of a typical kohl stick.

Vessels in the shape of hedgehogs are found in the Predynastic Period, but cosmetic containers of this type, with a criss-cross pattern representing the animal’s spines, appear to be products of the New Kingdom to the Late Period.

The hedgehog was revered in Egypt from early times, probably for its nocturnal habits and its ability to make its way in the dark; for its connection with renewal and rebirth due to its reappearance after hibernation; and for its ability to defend itself against much larger animals.

Blue glazed composition. Late Period, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664-525 BC. Now in the British Museum. EA58323

i used to have to see a mandatory therapist for school and for a good 6 weeks i had him convinced i had a toddler and that i was a teen mother, honestly the most alive ive ever felt. i did however get kicked out of the free therapy programm once i got made bc it was 'disrespectful' to fake having a baby
