the myth of the werewolf is a really old one and isn’t about a specific species of wolf- it probably originated in europe around 9000 years ago, and combined religious transformation stories with the wolf transformation lore of ancient greece and interaction with some slavic tribes in what is now russia who really liked to wear wolfskin cloaks like this:
