Serena Williams crushed Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals of Wimbledon on Thursday. The 6-2, 6-4 thrashing was Williams the seventeenth straight victory over Sharapova.
It has been 11 years since Sharapova last beat Williams. Since that time, Williams has won an incredible 14 Grand Slam titles. Williams has won 20 overall, nearing the all-time record of 24 set by Margaret Court in 1974.
But it is Sharapova, not Williams, who makes the most money. In 2014, she was listed as Forbes highest paid athlete, earning $24.4 million. Serena earned $22 million.
The differences is endorsements. Sharapova earned $22 million in endorsements along and just $2.4 million in prize money. Williams, dominant on the court, took home $11 million in prize money but just $11 million in endorsements.
Serena Williams is the most dominant female athlete of our era and perhaps any era. So why isn’t she earning more in endorsements?
Kevin Adler, a marketing expert, suggested there is a double standard for male and female athletes. “You’d be hard-pressed to find a popular male athlete who doesn’t also have physicality and sex appeal. But that comes second to winning for guys, whereas for female athletes, looks come first,” Adler told Women’s Wear Daily in 2013.
This isn’t to suggest that Serena Williams is not attractive. But perceptions of her body are frequently overlaid with racist stereotypes. Sharapova, by contrast, is blond, thin, leggy and has worked as a model. In the eyes of corporate marketers, that is apparently valued more than on-court performance.
Ain’t that a bitch? Forget being mixed race. Imagine if Serena was white. They would be kissing the soles of her feet. Serena and Black women, in general, get scrutinized and criticized because of our race, body type, and being women (who are viewed/treated as sub-human due to our race). We always have to deal with two bitches at the same time: racism and sexism.

Meet the muslim student, Faatimah Knight, who raised $30,000 to help fix churches destroyed by fire
Faatimah Knight is pursuing an MA in Religious Studies at the Chicago Theological Seminary and holds a BA in Islamic Law and Theology from Zaytuna College.
Ms Knight’s campaign – carried out as Muslims around the world marked the festival of Ramadan - followed a smaller, more modest enterprise.
Days after the shooting dead of nine people at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, she and some friends wanted to gather $500 to send flowers; they ended up raising $900.
And when she read about the series of churches that were burned down, Faatimah carried on her quest to help these churches in need.
“All houses of worship are sanctuaries, a place where all should feel safe, a place we can seek refuge when the world is too much to bear.”
She said that Islam taught of the need to protect the weak and vulnerable. She said while the black Christian communities of the South might not be weak, they were vulnerable.
“Traditionally, when we have been on our best behaviour, we have created space for other faiths, and let people worship as they see fit.”
The other post says “a group of Muslims” but let’s acknowledge that a young black Muslim girl did this. There’s something significant about that. Please don’t erase her from the picture.
