Pakistan-born, Komal Ahmad, develops phone app to feed almost 600,000 homeless people in San Francisco.

While she was walking near campus one fall day, a homeless man approached her, asking for money to buy food because he was hungry. Instead of giving him cash, Komal invited the man to lunch. As they ate, he told her his story. He was a soldier recently returned from Iraq and had a bad turn of luck. “He’d already gone on two deployments and now he’s come back, he’s 26 and on the side of the road begging for food,” Komal said. “It just blew my mind.”

It bothered her so she decided to do something about it. Within a few months, Komal set up a program at UC Berkeley that allowed the school’s dining halls to donate excess food to local homeless shelters. That program then expanded to 140 college campuses across the US in about three years.

Komal, now 25 years old and CEO of a nonprofit service called Feeding Forward, is looking to expand even more into what she calls on-demand food recovery. Through a website and mobile app, Feeding Forward matches businesses that have surplus food with nearby homeless shelters.

When companies or event planners have surplus food, they tap the Feeding Forward app and provide details of their donation. A driver is dispatched to quickly pick up the leftovers and deliver them to food banks.

“These are huge cities that have absurd amounts of food thrown away every day,” Komal said. “We are trying to make the Bay Area a case study to say ‘Hey, if it works here, it can work anywhere.’

every aged up version of steven and connie i’ve seen had steven grow up all tall and bulky while connie remained a wispy, delicate thing, and while that’s cute and all, consider: steven remaining a pudgy shortstack while connie grows up into a MAGNIFICENT AMAZONIAN WAR GODDESS

Anonymous asked: I checked your tags and I couldn't find it, but if you've addressed this before I apologize. Recently I've seen some chain posts about women who narrowly escaped sex trafficking. One about a woman nearly abducted by an older woman in a hobby lobby parking lot, the other drugged with heroin by two women in a mall bathroom. Both confirmed as fake by snopes. Intuitively I know myths like these hurt sex trafficking victims and non-trafficked sex workers, but could not articulate how. Could you help?

:

Myths like this serve to reinforce incredibly abusive and harmful practices of the #rescue-industry by keeping people ignorant and terrified of the realities of sex trafficking, for starters. Sex trafficking almost always involves someone the victim knows just like most acts of violence against women. Specifically, these myths feed into #moral-panic about the sex industry and incite calls for all kinds of ridiculous laws that harm sex workers in the name of protecting innocent victims. In general, sex workers are expected to absorb male violence to protect women society deems valuable

In addition, we know that women experience the most danger in our own homes due to family and domestic violence yet we’re constantly warned about ‘stranger danger’ and how dangerous the world ‘out there’ is, and this serves to keep women passive, terrified and inside the home while again failing to address the real causes and perpetrators of violence against women. These sex trafficking hoaxes aren’t much different to the mass chain emails sent out by men who run self-defense classes warning women about guys smothering women in parking lots with chloroform and assorted nonsense. They’re designed to terrify women and in this case, perpetuate sex trafficking hysteria.

I’m not sure if this is the response you were after but I hope it helps.

Plus, and I’m about to go to sleep so I won’t be around for the messages I get about this, Michael Jackson 100% did what he was accused of doing. I wish it wasn’t so, because he’s one of the most brilliant musical artists of all time without question or doubt and because he had some smart shit to say on race issues, but the whole thing about the kids recanting was made up for a chain e-mail and the FBI released like twenty-five years of evidence after he died (including vintage child porn, child porn filmed at Neverland Ranch, investigations dating back to 1985–eight years before the first public allegations, witness statements, former friends and employees saying he was obsessed with child porn, and so on). And he spent $35 million to keep twenty-four victims from speaking to the media.

Like, he did it. It doesn’t change the fact that he made Thriller, just like Roman Polanski still made Rosemary’s Baby and Chinatown, and Cosby made The Cosby Show and A Different World. Bad people can, and frequently do, make good art. How that colors your experience of that art is completely personal, but loving that art doesn’t change what its creators did.

Michael Jackson’s influence on music (in and out of his own genre) and culture at large can’t be denied or overstated, but he was still guilty as hell.

#SayHerName (7/22/15): Another transgender WOC has been found dead. 25-year old India Clarke is the 10th trans woman this year (and the 9th TWOC) to be killed in the US, and it was sadly in my hometown. Details are still emerging, but the local media have been horrendous, refusing to call her by her name. The police are also refusing to identify her as trans or treat this as a hate crime.

Help us demand justice. Please signal boost the following event to uplift her name: Vigil and Rally for Justice for India Clarke We will also be working to help the family raise funds for her funeral (more info on that soon.#staywoke #farfromover
