Pill millipedes are any members of two living (and one extinct) orders of millipedes that resemble woodlice, although they are not closely related. They are short-bodied compared to other millipedes and will roll into a ball as a defense mechanism. They can also exude a noxious liquid, which may be both caustic and toxic, to repel predators. Pill millipedes are detritivorous, feeding on decomposing plant matter, usually in woodlands.
Although often confused with woodlice (isopods), the two are easy to tell apart: isopods have seven pairs of legs and pill millipedes have two pairs of legs per body segment, with eleven to thirteen segments.
Watching my neighbors across the street having a block party during a literal time of pandemic makes me wonder if several hundred years ago there was another person looking out their window watching their neighbors congregate during the black death like verily forsooth, thou art truly ass-headed knaves.
Women in Hadramaut, Yemen wear an all black abaya and conical straw sunhat called a madhalla when working in the fields. A madhalla is made from plaited strips of date palm leaves, and the high peak promotes air circulation inside the hat.
The black color of the abaya actually keeps them cooler by absorbing heat before it reaches their skin.
