What bird is native to the Amazon, has a chestnut crest, and is known for its foul smell? The Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin)! It’s the only bird known to have a form of digestion called foregut fermentation, in which bacteria help to break down the cell walls of leaves, its main source of food. This ability comes with a price, though. The bacteria release methane that the Hoatzin then belches out. The burps have a manure-like odor that inspired its other name, “stinkbird”!

Data shows….
“But the available evidence suggests that this month’s Black Lives Matter protests have not contributed to a surge in covid-19 cases. In a new working paper, researchers from Bentley University, the University of Colorado and San Diego State University used mobile-phone data from SafeGraph, a geolocation data firm, and covid-19 case data from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to determine whether the protests were associated with less social-distancing behaviour and more covid-19 cases. In fact, the opposite was true.
Using data from 315 American cities with at least 100,000 people, covering the period mid-May to mid-June, the researchers compared the experience of the 281 cities where protests erupted with the 34 where they did not. One third of protesting cities saw large-scale gatherings with 1,000 or more attendees, making those particular regions more susceptible to another outbreak. Nonetheless, they found that the protests had no significant effect one way or the other on the incidence of covid-19.
They also found one possible—and surprising-—reason for this. Protests were actually associated with an increase in social-distancing behaviour; for example, residents overall spent an additional 0.18 hours, or 11 minutes, per day at home (see chart).”

Dahlke noted this assessment was conservative – it does not take into account other climate crisis factors that could affect marine life, like ocean acidification, that could amplify the effects on sensitive populations.

Maybe the most upsetting thing I’ve ever seen, remarkable given that I’ve followed this tumblr for so long. Spotted at the Long Beach Flea in September 2019.

A While back I was divided on what the equivalent of Princess Andromeda and Cetus, the sea monster she was sacrificed to, and the answer ended up being that they are one and the same.
Xia was born a Monster, and the only child of the the King and Queen of an independent “city-state” on the water (kinda like if somewhere like Boston became its own nation and a monarchy). Her parent’s were terrified that their one decendent is essentially a whale, and begged to Neptune if there was any way he could make their daughter human. Neptune agreed, only if they made him the City’s Patron God.
Since turning a born-monster into a regular human is beyond Neptune’s capabilities, he instead gifted the princess with a “false body” that she possesses. When Xia (the monster) falls asleep, Xia (the human) awakes and vice versa, one half feeling like a dream to the other. Much of her childhood she was not explained this by her parents, and wondered whether she was a human who dreamt of being a Monster, or a Monster dreaming about being human.
