The Chadriiformes order is an immensely diverse group of birds which includes 350 species of small to medium-sized birds. Although the majority of species are strong-flying birds of open-country or open water and islands, some do occur in dense forests. They mostly tend to nest on the ground and feed on animal-matter either in, or near water. Their distribution is worldwide and they are known to perform some of the most extensive migration processes among all birds.
What suborder an individual belongs to, is usually easily recognisable by it’s general body plan. An example would be the suborder Alcae, the members of which are compact, streamlined marine birds which have short and rather narrow wings as well as webbed feet. Members of that order would include puffins and guillemots.
