well I sure wasn’t expecting to get blindsided by the blurb for a toy spinosaurus today but it sure looks like that’s what’s happening anyway

… I guess maybe happiness IS the same as success….. my eyes have been opened…….

Transcript of booklet that came with toy spinosaurus.

I am Essien the Spinosaurus, the largest carnivorous dinosaur. Well, other dinosaurs do not respect my size. They looked at me as someone that does not eat proper meat. I am 15 meters long and I stand out among carnivorous dinosaurs. To be honest, sometimes I hate my size. If it wasn’t for my size, maybe everyone would be more tolerant of me. I understand what they think. A successful carnivorous dinosaur is one that stands at the top of the food chain and never worry about survival. To them, my size means that I should be one such dinosaur. But I have taken a completely different path.  I don’t run on land, and I am not keen on catching dinosaurs. I like the cool water and am interested in the slippery fish. So, I spend most of my life in the water. I did not make that choice on a whim. Can you see my head? It is very much like a crocodile and naturally suits to be in the water. My teeth are like harpoons and the notch in my mouth is great for fishing. Look at my forelegs, they are stronger than other carnivorous dinosaurs. My hind limbs, on the other hand, are much shorter than them. My webbed toes can paddle or walk on the mud.  Finally, my flat and long tail looks like what many aquatic animals have. After all, although I am a giant, I am better suited to living in the water than on land. Did someone say that becoming a top predator is the only way to succeed? Not for me. I am happy being a fisher. And isn’t happiness the same as success?“

“There are two MLKs. There once was a man named Martin Luther King Jr. who actually lived and breathed. He was a radical who believed in the redistribution of wealth, argued for slave reparations and that wrote that moderate whites who didn’t speak out on racism were just as bad as the Ku Klux Klan. Seventy-five percent of Americans disapproved of that man when he was killed by a white supremacist in 1968. Then, there is the Martin Luther King Jr. that exists in the collective white memory. Through a complex combination of whitewashing, self-guilt and the intentional rewriting of history that absolves them of their hatred, they have painted a sanitized, impressionist portrait of a civil rights icon whose dreams were fulfilled by America’s unwavering commitment to justice and equality. Out of whole cloth, they managed to fabricate a fantastic hologram of King that is ahistorical, but still “based on a true story.” Their Martin was a lover, not a fighter. They remember a socially conservative, respectable reconciler; not an anti-establishment revolutionary. And, for their sake, his doctrine of nonviolent resistance was eventually reduced to simple “nonviolence.” This is the King they will remember this weekend.”
