Meninas do Brasil [Girls from Brazil], 90s, by Mari Stockler
Born in São Paulo, Mari Stockler is a set designer and director of films and documentaries. As a photographer, she has a job that marked the fashion atmosphere in Brazil. She clicked for seven years the girls from the peripheries of cities like Rio, Belém and Salvador. The focus was on their clothes. In addition to the record, the photos revealed, as in an anthropological study, the way of life of these young women, whom the photographer joined in brazilian funk proms, streets and popular stores.
“I’m Mexican and Kenyan at the same time. I’ve seen the quarrels over my nationality, but I’m Kenyan and Mexican at the same time. So again, I am Mexican-Kenyan, and I am fascinated by carne asada tacos.”
